I am absolutely loving the MOM jeans at Topshop and Urban Outfitters. They are a lot like my classic Levi 501’s turned up, but they are slightly higher waisted and slightly narrower at the turn ups.
I just love that they’re called Mom jeans after our previously considered uncool but now so cool 80’s and 90’s super-mums.
The name ‘Mom Jeans‘ has its origin with a 2003 Saturday Night Live sketch for a fake brand of jeans called Mom Jeans, which used the tagline “For this Mother’s Day, don’t give Mom that bottle of perfume. Give her something that says, ‘I’m not a woman anymore…I’m a mom!’ ”
Since then Mom jeans has been known as a mocking term for these previously considered unfashionable and unflattering jeans. Mom jeans are famous for being high waisted, making our bums appear longer and larger, especially because they’re traditionally in a solid light blue shade. They sometimes also include pleats, tapered legs and even elastic waistbands. Practical mums took to wearing these jeans with a tucked in blouse or shirt until the mid-1990s, when lower rise jeans started to become fashionable, making mums totally uncool.
But, now in our maturity we have come to love our mom’s and have a profound respect for their practicality and motherliness and curvy posteriors. What could be more womanly? Why wouldn’t we want to be glowing, resourceful mums with big round bums?
